The date is finally confirmed. Plug-in solar panels become fully legal to connect via a standard UK wall socket on 27 August 2026. The Statutory Instrument — SI 2026 No. 848 — was made on 16 July, laid before Parliament on 17 July, and comes into force on 27 August.

That's genuinely significant news. But most coverage of this story is missing something important, and if you're planning to buy a kit when the date arrives, you need to know about it first.


The Gap Most Coverage Is Missing

Here's the honest situation as of 28 July 2026, in plain English:

The law is finished. The shops are empty.

A legal date is not an on-sale date. What becomes legal on 27 August is operating a compliant plug-in solar kit. Compliant means the kit meets the government's Interim Product Specification version 2, uses an approved plug, and the microinverter is listed on the ENA G98 Type Test Register.

As of 24 July 2026, the ENA register listed no certified plug-in solar product. Not one. The law exists; the certified kit does not yet.

As Solar Energy Concepts puts it directly: "A legal date is not an on-sale date."


The Other Problem: The Kits Currently on Sale Are the Wrong Kits

This is the detail that will catch the most people out.

The Interim Product Specification covers panels and a microinverter only — no battery storage. Batteries are explicitly excluded from the legislation at the definition level, not just as an afterthought. A plug-in battery that charges from the socket and discharges back later is not a "plug-in microgenerator" under SI 2026/848, full stop.

Now look at what's currently on sale in UK shops. The EcoFlow STREAM Pro retails at £799 and the STREAM Ultra X at £1,249. Both include battery storage as a central feature. According to Solar Energy Concepts, every plug-in kit currently available in UK shops includes a battery — which means no kit currently on sale qualifies for the new self-install route under SI 2026/848.

This doesn't mean those kits are illegal or unsafe. It means they need a hardwired connection by a qualified electrician, as they always have. The new self-install socket route applies only to panel-plus-microinverter kits with no battery, certified to IPS v2.


What the Law Actually Says

SI 2026/848 is narrower than many news reports suggest. Here's precisely what it does:

The six limits that decide whether a kit qualifies, according to Plug In Solar and Plug In Solar Explained:

  1. Maximum inverter output: 800 VA (watts AC)
  2. Maximum inverter current: 3.5A
  3. Maximum panel input: 2,000W DC at STC
  4. Factory-fitted moulded plug with a 5A fuse and partially insulated pins — not a standard plug you add yourself
  5. No extension leads — the cable must run directly to a fixed socket
  6. No battery storage

One important clarification on the 800W limit: the 800W cap applies to the microinverter output, not the panels. Having 2,000W of panels connected to an 800W inverter is legal and common practice — it's called "clipping" and is widely used to optimise output at different times of day.


The One Device Per Household Question

The IPS v2 moved to allowing one 800W device per final ring main circuit — meaning a home with separate circuits could potentially use two systems. However, as 4 Billion Years On notes, G98 — the engineering recommendation that governs your actual DNO connection — still caps it at 800W per household. Until G98 is amended, one device per household is the real-world limit regardless of what the IPS says about circuits. There is currently no date for the G98 amendment.


Fire Safety Restrictions

One new restriction that deserves attention: the legislation includes fire safety requirements covering where panels can be installed. Higher-risk buildings face tighter restrictions. Specifically, according to 4 Billion Years On:

If you live in a flat above a certain height or in a building with timber or cladded balconies, check the consumer guidance — expected to be published alongside the regulations — before buying.


What About Lidl, B&Q and Currys?

Despite being named as retail partners in March 2026 — four months ago — none of these retailers currently stock any plug-in solar kits in UK shops as of late July 2026. Amazon sells existing battery-integrated kits, but these remain in the hardwired-installation category under the new rules.

The realistic sequence for when certified kits appear on shelves is:

  1. 27 August — law comes into force
  2. Manufacturers certify kits against IPS v2 and register microinverters on the ENA Type Test Register
  3. Retailers take delivery and begin stocking
  4. First certified kits available for purchase

How long steps 2–4 take is unknown. Manufacturers who have been preparing for this moment may certify quickly — days or weeks after 27 August. Others may take longer. The first certified kit on the ENA register is the event to watch for, not the legal date itself.

What This Means for Your Decision

If you want to buy now, before 27 August: The legal route remains a hardwired connection by a CPS-registered electrician. Budget £150–£300 for the connection on top of the kit. The savings and performance are identical to a self-installed kit — only the connection method and upfront cost differ. Both EcoFlow and Jackery kits are available now via this route.

If you want to wait for the self-install route: Wait for a certified kit to appear on the ENA Type Test Register — that's the trigger, not 27 August. The first certified kit could appear within days of the law coming into force, or it could take weeks. Watch the ENA register directly at energynetworks.org.

If you're looking at EcoFlow STREAM kits: These are excellent products but currently battery-integrated — they don't qualify for the self-install socket route under SI 2026/848. They remain fully legal with an electrician connection. EcoFlow has not yet announced a battery-free version certified to IPS v2, though this is widely expected.

Don't miss the VAT window: 0% VAT on solar products expires in March 2027, reverting to 5%. A kit costing £449 today would cost approximately £471 after that date. Buying before March 2027 saves a small but real amount.


The One Thing to Do Right Now

While the certified kits are being prepared, there's one genuinely useful thing you can do today: check whether your specific outdoor space will actually generate decent output.

The law doesn't change the physics. A south-facing, shade-free spot will generate Excellent output. A north-facing balcony with a nearby tree might generate very little — and knowing that before spending £300–£500 on a kit takes 60 seconds.
