Since the government announced plug-in solar would be coming to UK shops "within months" back in March, the headlines have been relentlessly positive. Currys, B&Q, Amazon and Lidl have all signed up. The wiring regulations have been updated. A safety consultation has been launched and closed.

So why can't you still just walk into a shop and buy one?

The Missing Piece — And Why It Matters

The honest status right now is this: you still cannot legally plug a solar panel into a standard wall socket yourself.

This surprises many people who read the March and June headlines — so here's why.

There are actually two separate things required before a true DIY plug-in solar kit can go on sale:

1. Updated wiring regulationsDone. BS 7671 Amendment 4, published 15 April 2026, updated the UK's electrical rules to permit plug-in solar connections. This is the legal foundation. Without it, no manufacturer could certify a product for the UK market at all.

2. A certified product specificationNot yet finalised. The DESNZ Interim Product Specification — the technical document that defines exactly what a compliant plug-in solar kit must do — was published as a draft for consultation on 16 June 2026. The consultation closed 30 June. The government's response, confirming the final specification, is expected around 22 July 2026.

Until that specification is finalised and manufacturers certify their kits against it, no certified plug-in solar kit legally exists in the UK — regardless of what the wiring regulations say. The wiring rules create the framework; the product specification defines what's allowed to operate within it.

As Plug Solar Hub puts it plainly: "No certified plug-in solar kit yet exists, because the DESNZ Interim Product Specification has not yet published."


What the 22 July Response Will Confirm

The government's response to the consultation — expected around 22 July — is the next genuinely significant milestone. According to the official consultation document, it will confirm:

Once that response is published, manufacturers can begin certifying their products. Once certified, kits appear on the ENA Type Test Register — and retailers can legally stock and sell them as self-install products.

The government has committed to "moving at pace" following publication. A government response to the consultation is expected around 22 July 2026, with decisions on next steps and implementation to follow as soon as practicable. Realistically, most UK households will be able to walk into a shop or order online and buy a certified plug-in solar kit from late 2026 onwards.


What You Can Do Right Now — Legally

The fact that the DIY self-install route isn't yet available doesn't mean you're locked out of plug-in solar entirely. There is one fully legal route available today:

Buy a kit and have a qualified electrician make the connection.

A CPS-registered electrician (registered with NICEIC, NAPIT, or ELECSA) can connect an 800W plug-in solar kit via a hardwired fused spur — exactly the same method used for any other small-scale generation system. This is fully compliant with BS 7671 Amendment 4 and all current UK regulations. You still notify your DNO under G98 within 28 days, but the electrician typically handles this as part of the job.

It's worth being direct about something: some of the coverage around the March and June announcements overstated where things stood. The government's political announcements moved faster than the technical standards process — which is not unusual, but has led to confusion among consumers who read "plug-in solar is coming to Lidl" and went looking for a kit to buy.

The direction of travel is real and the timeline is moving. But "the government has announced it" and "you can buy one today" are different things, and it's worth understanding that distinction before you start making purchasing decisions.

The good news is that the remaining gap is genuinely small — a government response document and a manufacturer certification process, not a fundamental rethink. Late 2026 for widespread retail availability remains a realistic expectation.
