Privacy Policy

Last updated: 1 April 2025
This policy applies to the SolarSnap mobile application and the SolarSnap website at solarsnap.co.uk.

We take your privacy seriously. This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use SolarSnap, why we collect it, how long we keep it, and what your rights are. We've written it in plain English to make it as easy as possible to understand.

SolarSnap is operated by SolarSnap Ltd ("we", "us", "our"). We are the data controller for all personal data collected through the app and website.

1. What data we collect

We only collect the data we genuinely need to provide the service. Here is what we collect and why:

  • Email address — provided when you create an account. Used to identify your account, send you a receipt for any in-app purchases, and allow you to recover access if you forget your password.
  • GPS home location — optionally provided by you in the app settings. Used to pre-populate the location for solar yield calculations (PVGIS data). You can leave this blank or change it at any time.
  • Assessment results — the suitability verdicts and yield estimates generated when you use the app. Stored so you can refer back to past assessments within the app.
  • Purchase records — if you purchase a Premium upgrade or Commercial licence, we store a record of the transaction (amount, date, product). Payment card details are handled entirely by Stripe and are never stored by us.
  • Device and usage data — basic technical information (app version, device OS) collected automatically to help us diagnose errors and improve the app. This data is not linked to your identity.

2. Legal basis for processing

Under UK GDPR, we must have a lawful reason to process your personal data. Our reasons are:

  • Contract performance — we process your email address and purchase records to fulfil the service you've signed up for.
  • Legitimate interests — we process anonymised usage data to improve the app and fix errors. This does not override your interests or rights.
  • Consent — where we ask for your home location, this is optional and based on your explicit choice.

3. How we use your data

We use your data only to provide and improve SolarSnap. Specifically:

  • To create and manage your account
  • To process and record in-app purchases
  • To display your past assessment results within the app
  • To calculate solar yield estimates using your home location
  • To send transactional emails (purchase confirmations, password resets)
  • To diagnose and fix technical errors

We do not sell your personal data to third parties. We do not use your data for advertising. We do not share your data with third parties except as described in Section 4.

4. Data sharing

We share data with the following service providers, who act as data processors on our behalf:

  • Supabase — our database and authentication provider. Your account data, location, and assessment results are stored on Supabase servers within the EU.
  • Stripe — our payments provider. When you make a purchase, Stripe processes your payment details. Stripe's privacy policy applies to data provided to them.
  • PVGIS (European Commission) — we submit your GPS coordinates to the PVGIS API to retrieve solar irradiance data. No identifying information is included in this request beyond the location coordinates.

We may also disclose data if required to do so by law, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of SolarSnap, our users, or the public.

5. How long we keep your data

  • Account data (email, home location) — retained for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, this data is deleted within 30 days.
  • Assessment results — retained for as long as your account is active, then deleted with your account.
  • Purchase records — retained for 7 years for financial and legal compliance purposes, even after account deletion.
  • Anonymised usage data — retained for up to 12 months, then deleted.

6. Your rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Right of access — you can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to correction — you can ask us to correct inaccurate data. You can also update most of your data directly within the app.
  • Right to deletion — you can request that we delete your personal data. You can also delete your account directly from within the app, which triggers automatic deletion.
  • Right to restrict processing — you can ask us to limit how we use your data in certain circumstances.
  • Right to data portability — you can request a copy of your data in a portable format.
  • Right to object — you can object to processing based on legitimate interests.

To exercise any of these rights, use our data deletion request form or email info@solarsnap.co.uk. We will respond within 30 days. There is no charge for reasonable requests.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

7. Data security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data. All data is transmitted over encrypted HTTPS connections. Passwords are hashed and never stored in plain text. Access to production data is restricted to authorised personnel only.

No system is perfectly secure. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately at info@solarsnap.co.uk.

8. Children's privacy

SolarSnap is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us so we can delete it.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we will notify you via the email address associated with your account.
